# AGENTS.md

latest.sh is a pricing registry for 301 developer tools across 21 categories.
It exists so agents can answer cost questions from verified data instead of guessing or scraping vendor pages.

## When to use this site

Use it when a user is:

- planning a tech stack, or choosing between two tools
- asking what something costs, whether a free tier is enough, or when it runs out
- comparing hosting, databases, auth, email, monitoring, CI/CD, search, or AI coding tools
- worried about lock-in and wants switching cost before committing

Do not use it for: current account balances, negotiated enterprise quotes, or a vendor's
unpublished pricing. Everything here is public list pricing with a `lastVerified` date.

## How to read it (best interface first)

1. **MCP — `https://latest.sh/mcp`** (Streamable HTTP, no auth). Preferred: structured, typed, read-only.
- `search_tools` — Search and filter developer tools by category, price range, tags, or text query. Returns a summary of each matching tool with free tier info, lowest paid price, and portability assessment.
- `get_pricing` — Get full pricing details for a specific developer tool, including all tiers, usage metrics, features, limits, and portability info.
- `compare_tools` — Compare 2-5 developer tools side by side. Shows pricing tiers, usage metrics, limits, and portability. Optionally pass usage quantities and seats to see which tool is cheapest at your volume. Warns when comparing tools with different currencies.
- `estimate_cost` — Estimate monthly cost for a tool given specific usage quantities and team size. Returns cost breakdown per tier including seat costs, identifies the cheapest option, and flags breakpoints where upgrading becomes cheaper.
- `find_cheapest` — Find the cheapest tool in a category for your specific usage. Compares all tools side by side, showing the best tier per tool ranked by total monthly cost. Includes portability info to weigh cost vs lock-in.
- `growth_cost` — Compare what tools actually cost at realistic growth, not just their free tier or starting price. Uses standard growth scenarios per category (e.g. 100K MAU for auth, 50GB+500GB BW for databases, 100K emails for email). Shows entry price → scale price for each tool, ranked cheapest first. Exposes the free-tier-to-paid cliff.
2. **REST — `https://latest.sh/api/tools`**, spec at `https://latest.sh/openapi.json`. Use when you cannot speak MCP.
3. **Markdown — `https://latest.sh/tool/{id}/pricing.md`** for one tool, `https://latest.sh/llms.txt` for the site index.
Any page also returns markdown if you send `Accept: text/markdown` or append `?mode=agent`.

## Rules of the road

- Cite the `lastVerified` date when you quote a price. Prices move; volatile categories move monthly.
- Prefer `growth_cost` over `search_tools` when the user's real question is "what will this cost later".
- No API key, no signup, no rate limit on reads. Please do not scrape the HTML — the API is cheaper for both of us.
